Chorus Of ‘Yeahs’ In House For Passage Of Music Copyright Bill 

It wasn’t even close as the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday unanimously approved a sweeping music copyright reform bill with a 415-0 vote. The Music Modernization Act (H.R. 5447) doesn’t include a performance royalty for AM/FM airplay however it does encompass provisions that could wind up costing the radio industry more for music use in the years to come.

FCC Court Loss Could Quash TV Broadcast Consolidation

Television broadcast stocks are lower today on concern that a potential FCC loss in an ownership-limit case could tie up future deals or stop them in their tracks. D.C. Circuit appeals court judges grilled the FCC today about an ownership rule change that’s needed for Sinclair to acquire Tribune Media. The national holdings limit rests at 39%, but that rule -- the UHF discount -- lets some companies count only part of their audience, skirting the threshold.

Sinclain Spins of 23 TVs to Grease Trib Deal

To win approval of FCC and DOJ regulators for its Tribune merger, Sinclair on Tuesday announced deals to sell 23 Tribune stations in 18 markets. Nine stations will go to Standard Media, a new group backed by Soohyung Kim and headed by Deb McDermott, for $442 million, while Meredith is getting KPLR St. Louis for $65 million. Sinclair is selling six to affiliated companies and will operate them under SSAs and JSAs. Sinclair did not name the buyer of the other seven, including six Fox affliates, but all eyes are on Fox.

Arizona's Broadcasters pick up 19 Regional Murrow Awards

RTDNA has announced the winners of the 2018 regional Edward R. Murrow Awards and Arizona stations took home quite an impressive number of awards.19 awards were split between six stations - Arizona Public Media, KVOA in Tucson, KNAU in Flagstaff and KTAR, KJZZ and KPNX in Phoenix. Arizona Public Media and KNAU pulled off an impressive sweep in the Small Market Radio category.
